Subterranean Animism ver 0.02a is out.

For my list of usernames, click here.

If anyone has been paying attention to Touhou recently, ZUN released the newest trial version of Subterranean Animism. As far as I know, the only thing that was fixed would be some glitches, and the enemy health has been toned down.

Get it here.

It actually seems like version 0.02b was just released. According to the Touhou Wiki, 0.02a came out June 29 and 0.02b came out July 20. Doesn't really matter for me though since I'm still using version 0.01a.

And I never knew about the corner glitch until I read about it. That's a pretty big oversight. But I still don't use it even though I'm playing the first version. It defeats the purpose of playing the game.

I don't really like the way the Touhou series is going now. I don't like Mountain of Faith that much, and Subterranean Animism feels the same way. As you said in a previous entry, SA feels too difficult. I could pretty much quote everything you already said and that would describe how I feel.

The main thing I don't like about MoF and SA is the new power/bomb system. I don't claim to be a pro at the Touhou games, but I like to think that I'm pretty good at them. But I still need my bombs to save my ass when I get trapped by bullets. But now, bombing cripples your power and makes it harder to kill the bosses, so I end up dying whether I bomb or not. And for some character types, bombing doesn't even do any damage to the boss while it protects you. I wish that ZUN would go back to the old system. Or at the least, make it so that power and bombs aren't connected.

I do hope that the final version of the game is a little more balanced. I mean, I'm having trouble 1cc a trial that only has 3 stages. At this rate, there's no way I can 1cc a full game with 6 stages.

Personally, I always thought that MoF was the slowest game compared to the rest of the series. I like the challenge in SA, and while it's frustrating that I can't make it past stage 3 on the trial on normal, it seems to help with my overall ability to dodge in Touhou, like EoSD, because there is no visible hitbox when focused, it helped me memorize where the character's hitbox is.

As for the version numbering, ZUN's website does not offer a 0.02b for download, only 0.02a, which is what I got. I have to say, though, as 0.02a has toned the enemy health down, making the game considerably easier.

I didn't see 0.02b on ZUN's website either. I guess the page hasn't been updated yet. But it's up there. I found it through ZUN's blog here:

http://kourindou.exblog.jp/8336642/

The update is only a 245 KB file, though. I'm not sure what it changes/fixes from version 0.02a.

It's been a while since I played through MoF, but for some reason I found it too hard for me. I've been able to 1cc all the previous games at least on Normal, and some on Hard. But with MoF, I couldn't even beat Normal, even when continuing. I just had trouble using the power/bomb system. It took me a while, but I was eventually able to 1cc it using ReimuA on Normal. It took me so many tries, though.

And yeah, playing EoSD again really makes me appreciate being able to see my hitbox while focusing. It can be challenging without it.

I guess I should try the latest version of SA. If the enemy health has been toned down some, maybe I won't have so much trouble. I didn'twant to update it at first because I wasn't sure if I could keep my current player data scores and replays. I've cleared all 6 char types for Easy, Normal, and most of Hard so far. I don't want to have to start over again.
